Microblading vs. Powder Brows vs. Combi Brows vs. Ombré Brows: Understanding the Differences
What is Microblading?
Microblading is a semi-permanent makeup technique that uses a handheld tool with fine needles to deposit pigment into the skin. The method creates fine, hair-like strokes that mimic natural brow hairs. Ideal for those with sparse or thin brows, microblading offers a natural look that lasts up to 12 months, depending on your skin type and aftercare routine. Microblading is best if you are willing to get them topped up regularly (at least once a year for the first few years). If you have very oily skin, it’s best to opt for powder brows as microblading may not last for you.
Key Features of Microblading:
- Mimics natural eyebrow hair with fine, crisp strokes.
- Requires touch-ups every 9-12 months for optimal results.
- Is buildable over time.

What are Powder Brows?
Powder brows, also known as powder shading or machine brows, involve using a tattoo machine to apply pigment in a soft, powdery gradient. This method gives the effect of filled-in brows similar to makeup application. Powder brows work well for most skin types and last 1-3 years.
Key Features of Powder Brows:
- Achieves a soft, filled-in look like eyebrow powder.
- Suitable for all skin types, particularly oily skin.
- Offers options for a natural or more dramatic appearance.
- Requires touch-ups every year to maintain the look and generally lasts longer than microblading.

What are Combination Brows?
Combination brows (or combi-brows) combine aspects of microblading and powder brows. You’ll get both the hair strokes (achieved through microblading) and the powder shading effect (achieved with the machine).

Why are combi-brows more expensive?
Combi-brows requires the use of two techniques and two sets of needles. The appointment often lasts longer and costs more to offer in terms of time, skill and equipment. I charge an extra £20 for combi-brows. See my prices page here for microblading prices, powder brow prices and combi-brow prices in Aldershot and Farnham.
What are Ombre Brows?
Ombre brows is a form of powder brow technique that creates a gradient effect. This technique starts with a lighter pigment at the front of the brow and transitions to a darker pigment at the tail. Ombré brows deliver a natural, yet defined look that lasts 1-3 years but it’s best to get it topped up once a year.
Key Features of Ombré Brows:
- Provides a gradient effect from light to dark.
- Suitable for most skin types, including sensitive and oily skin.
- Can achieve both natural and more pronounced looks.
- Requires touch-ups every year for upkeep.

Which Semi-Permanent Brow Technique is Right for You?
The best eyebrow technique for you depends on your desired aesthetic and natural brow attributes. Microblading is perfect for a more natural, hair-like appearance. Powder brows offer a filled-in, makeup-like finish. Ombré brows provide a soft gradient effect that combines natural and defined elements.
